Big Changes Coming to Dickinson ISD

When Lago Mar students return to school on Aug. 22, they are in for a surprise — Dickinson ISD has made a few changes that will have a big impact on students. Take a look.

Transition Day for Students

Students starting school for the first time, moving to a new grade level or a new campus may experience anxiety. To ease them into the school year, Dickenson ISD has implemented a Transition Day for students entering pre-k and kindergarten, as well as grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. Transition Day will take place Aug. 21, the day before school officially starts. This will give teachers and staff an opportunity to help students adjust before the other grade levels return. While each campus will tailor the day to meet the needs of their students, the school schedule will run like a normal school day.

All Day Pre-K

Pre-K kids will have the opportunity to attend a full day of school from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The purpose is to provide a high-quality early childhood program to better prepare young students for kindergarten. The program utilizes a curriculum that addresses all 10 domains of the Texas Pre-kindergarten Guidelines, including social and emotional development, language and communication, emergent literacy reading, emergent literacy writing, math, science, social studies, fine arts, physical development and health and technology. Students must meet eligibility guidelines.

Grade Level Realignment

This year, the district is realigning grade levels to provide more room for pre-k students to attend school for a full day. Elementary schools will now serve grades pre-k through third. Fourth and fifth-grade students will attend middle school. Sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students will attend junior high. High schools will serve ninth through 12th-grade students.

STEAM Academy Now Offered at All Campuses

Students enrolled in the district’s STEAM Academy will no longer have to travel. This year, each campus will have its own STEAM Academy program. The program encourages exploration of STEAM concepts for students in grades 5 through 8. For this school year, eighth-grade students will continue to attend the program at Kranz Junior High so they can finish the program with their same cohort of students from the past several years. In 2024-2025, all STEAM students will attend the program at their home campus.

Shorts Are Allowed!

A welcome change to the dress code will be implemented this year. Secondary students may now wear shorts to school. They must be no shorter than mid-thigh in length with a hem. No cut-off shorts are allowed.
